In this article, I would like to establish two crucial facts that might change your perspective and impact positively your life. When we go back and study the Christian history, and we look at the early days we notice that the Church was solely responsible for the counseling of its people. Over the years and due to this wrong perception the Christian community was looked at as an unqualified entity to counsel its people. Picking up this view, the humanists have largely taken over the responsibility of counselling including the Christians. Furthermore, the Humanists consider that the Christian community do not possess any true solutions for problems facing humans like anxiety, stress and many more.
Come to reality, Christian are more qualified to counsel than as they are the only true entity that know and understand man’s uniqueness in creation and in purpose as they are fully aware of the humans position in the plan of the creator and in the eternity to come. This is the first crucial fact.
Now, the problem lies in the fact that the Christian community has simply adopted the therapeutic approaches developed by the secular community, such as Reality Therapy (Glasser) or Client-Centered Therapy (Carl Rogers), and applied them in the biblical approach. The latter is widely used by the clergy as the best therapeutic counseling technique. This method is preferred as it does the least damage and as it is believed that allowing the counselee to talk with minimal interference only to redirect the conversation which is believed to create the most positive changes in him.
The problem with the Client-Centered Therapy, along with all the other techniques that they are all based on one major big assumption that man has evolved and that he is his own god. This implies that the person has within himself the solutions to his problems.
Based on the above, it becomes impossible to take these approaches that are based on these assumptions and modify them for use in Christian counselling. It contradicts how the Bible and therefore God, looks and sees humans. They are created not evolved. Due to this second crucial fact, Biblical counselling is based on what it is called Creation Therapy.
The secular techniques used to resolve the problems facing humans are ineffective as man is continually facing a complicated, fast-paced world that threatens man’s emotional stability. In fact it is becoming worse. The divorce rate, sexual abuse and violence are on the rise. Suicide, alcohol and drug abuse have become everyday news. These techniques have been proven quite ineffective in the face of growing problems. This is where Biblical counselling based on Creation Therapy comes in.
